Dear Resident
City North Blog
The local neighbourhood policing priorities remain set until the end of this month when they will be reviewed. The current priorities across the area are
We’re continuing to effectively tackle these offences across the city north area, which covers Bulwell, Bestwood, Top Valley, Sherwood and Carrington. We cannot do this alone and rely heavily on the community to report suspicious activity and provide intelligence for us to take action against those causing the most harm.
You can do this by calling 101, via our website at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk or in an emergency via 999. You can also pass information anonymously via CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
Retail crime remains one of the biggest issues across the area, particularly within Bestwood and Bulwell. These offences are intrinsically linked to substance misuse. A number of repeat offenders have been identified and put before the courts in recent weeks. One such individual who was causing us significant issues has also been recalled to prison having breached the terms of his licence.
Through the Safer Streets 5 project, Bulwell will see some additional CCTV cameras towards the end of January near to Bulwell Bogs and surrounding area.
In Sherwood / Carrington the team continue to work hard to tackle ASB and persistent begging. This is in conjunction with partners and support services and action is being taken.
We’ve been dedicated to tackling the issues that have been identified by the community, and we’ve seen some really good success rates, with the city north area achieving a 27.7% positive outcome rate for reported offences, which is the best in the force. When I say positive outcomes, I mean when a suspect has been arrested, charged, cautioned, or given restorative justice, so essentially where someone has been sanctioned to prevent further offending, so this rating is very pleasing.
We have seen some really good successes recently but I’m not complacent, and neither are our teams, as we know we need to do more, and we can do more. In order to do so, we need your help. If you see a crime in progress or see suspicious activity, please call us as soon as possible so we can respond appropriately.
We have recently launched StreetWatch within Bestwood & Top Valley. Street watch, is a community patrol initiative that helps residents and members of the community make a difference in the area where they live, to encourage a sense of ownership and pride. It gives volunteers the opportunity to help keep the area safe and report issues to the most appropriate service to ensure action is taken and positive results are seen. There is an intrinsic link with Street Watch, immediate justice and trust and confidence. Any crimes in action will be reported directly to the police in the normal way via 101 or 999. Issues such as enviro crime, graffiti, overgrown paths etc will be reported via the OPCC's Fix My Street App where issues can then be identified, and the immediate justice reparation work be used to rectify. This will have a positive impact through the “You said… We did” process and allow for offenders on the immediate justice programme to have a genuine positive impact in their community. There will be existing groups in your area already whether that be community champions, litter pickers, walking groups, dog walking groups etc. All these people have an interest in their area and are already carrying out activities. The Street Watch volunteers will help with community cohesion and a sense of pride in the area. If you are interested in joining the scheme, please contact us at Streetwatch@notts.police.uk
Current performance
Clearly we cannot deal with the issues affecting the area without the support from the local residents, businesses, and partners. It will be of no surprise to anyone that there are clear links between drug use and acquisitive crime whether that be burglary, shop thefts or vehicle crime.
These offences along with the ASB linked to the dealing of these substances causes misery to many. We are committed to tackling this and I would encourage anyone with information about such activity to report it to the police or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Please don’t assume that anyone else has reported it – The information people have can be the missing piece in the jigsaw and may be the information we need to support a warrant being granted by the courts to allow us to take enforcement action.
