Burglaries in the City West area Dear Residents, We have currently arrested a 17 year old male for auto crime offences and burglaries that have happened within the last month. The investigation is currently on-going. We would just like to kindly remind you of the following advice to keeping your properties and vehicles safe. Residential Burglary Burglars often break in at the rear of properties. Ensure your rear garden is secure at all times with 1.8m perimeter fence/wall/gate and keep all gates lockedMake sure the front of your property is easily seen – fences and hedges should not be more than 1 meter highInstall dusk to dawn lighting above your front doorKeep your doors locked at all times – so many burglars just walk in – don’t make it easy for them!If you’re not in the room, close the windowMake sure your house looks occupied, leave lights on when you’re out. Use timer switches for when you’re awaySecurity products help to deter and detect crime Get Smart Security With Ring Doorbells, Cams & Security SystemsBusiness burglary Ensure your premises are alarmed. If you are in a remote location, your alarm should be remotely monitored and any confirmed activations forwarded directly to police for response.Make sure your premises has good lighting covering access points and dark or hidden areasInvest in CCTV to deter and detect crimeRetailers should leave their tills empty overnight with till drawer left open to avoid any damageValuable items should be stored within a securely locked cupboard/cage within the buildingProtecting your vehicles: Park your car in a garage or driveway if possible, or on a busy, well-lit road. Choose a ParkMark® accredited public car park wherever possibleNever leave anything on display in your car. The cost to repair damage to the vehicle will usually exceed the value of the theftDrivers of some Toyota and Honda vehicles and some 4 x 4’s should install measures to deter theft of catalytic converts e.g Catloc | Catalytic Convertor Theft Protection If you witness someone trying to break into a property or a vehicle then please call 999 immediately. To help us identify offenders a description of the person including their clothing, outerwear and shoes is always helpful. An exact location, what items are being used to break in, and what item/s the offender/s have left with. Please don't ever approach anyone, keep yourself safe and give as much information as you can the police until police arrive.
